IPPF Member Association of Ireland, IFPA has recently launched a new publication called "Ireland’s National Plan of Action to Address Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)".
The Plan of Action was developed as part of a pan-European Project coordinated by the EURONet FGM and implemented in 15 countries across Europe. The IFPA acted as the National Coordinator for Ireland and brought together a Steering Committee to advise on the development of the Plan of Action. The Steering Committee included representatives from government departments, state agencies, non governmental organisations and community based groups. Upon review of the Steering Committee, the Plan of Action was researched, written, published and launched by the IFPA and focussed on five strategies for action: Legal, Asylum, Health Care, Community Development and Development Aid.
The Plan of Action has received extensive print, television and radio media coverage and has been a successful advocacy tool within the Irish parliament. The Minister for Overseas Development Aid and the Minister for Health and Children have indicated their willingness work with the Steering Committee to progress the objectives of the Plan and several parliamentarians have raised the issue of FGM in media and parliamentary fora.
