IPPF joins G20 protest to highlight the importance of SRHR

01/04/2009

On 28 March, an IPPF contingent joined 40,000 other street demonstrators to demand jobs, economic justice and environmental accountability, kicking off six days of protest and action planned in the run-up to the G20 summit scheduled 1 April in London.

The demonstration "Put people First" was organized by a coalition of 150 groups bringing together world poverty campaigners, climate control activists, trade unionists, and anti-war activists as well as children’s, food aid and health NGOs. IPPF were there to highlight the importance of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

Poverty and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) are inextricably linked.

2008 Aid figures, recently released by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), show that European aid money has barely risen despite the huge impact of the financial crisis on developing countries.

The G20 is a group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 20 economies: 19 of the world's largest national economies, plus the European Union (EU).

Full membership of the G20: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the US and the EU.
