New GEAR Campaign website invites European civil society to improve the way they address gender equality

01/07/2009

The European Focal Point of the global “Campaign for Stronger Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) at the United Nations” has recently launched a new website www.un-gear.eu  to engage civil society organizations and individuals in improving the way we address women's rights and gender equality.

As many governments have failed to implement commitments to women’s rights made in the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, the Beijing Platform for Action, and many other UN world conferences, the GEAR campaign seeks a new UN entity dedicated to creating effective mechanisms to promote gender equality.

Sponsors of the campaign include: International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF); Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO); Development Alternatives for a New Era (DAWN); Association of Women’s Rights and Development (AWID); Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL).

Visitors of the website are invited to take action either by sending a letter to their government, getting involved in the European working group; signing on to the global GEAR Campaign or on to the online petition of the global GEAR Campaign.

The website also contains a map as well as a detailed breakdown on the current structure of the UN which deals with gender equality and women's empowerment.
