Member Association: Barbados

The Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA) was founded in 1954 and provides a comprehensive family planning programme, working closely with the Ministry of Health.

We offer counselling, information and modern contraceptive methods, including voluntary sterilisation and abortion, from our headquarters.

BFPA has established its own cytology laboratory, which helps relieve the pressure experienced by the government laboratory. The Association also works with the government to complement the services offered in public clinics.

In addition to clinical services, BFPA has 81 community delivery centres around the country to increase access to family planning. This community outreach effort has greatly increased contraceptive use in Barbados, which is currently 55% among women.

BFPA runs a Public Awareness Campaign Series.  This programme goes into the community and provides information and discussion opportunities for community groups of all ages on a number of different issues to promote an improved quality of life in the country.

Strong emphasis is directed to adolescents on education and counselling in order to stem the prevalence of adolescent and unwanted pregnancy.

A programme to provide education in schools is flourishing, and personal ‘youth encounters’ feature strongly in this campaign.

BFPA also has an ongoing programme to provide contraceptive services and education to workers at industrial work sites.
