Transforming lives

From the time the Association Centrafricaine pour le Bien-Etre Familial (ACABEF) came
into being in 1987, with the objective of helping the people of Central Africa Republic
(CAR) have unrestricted access to reproductive health services, we have made major
progress.

From one milestone to another, we have moved from a family planning service provider to a provider of a variety of sexual and reproductive
health (SRH) services, primarily targeted toward young people.

We are implementing a variety of programmes and services that include:

  • providing sexuality education and SRH services to young people
  • family planning
  • gynaecological counselling and care
  • post-abortion care
  • antenatal care
  • HIV voluntary counselling and testing (VCT)

Clients who need antiretroviral (ARV) drugs are referred to facilities running free ARV treatment programmes.

Involving men and reaching grassroots
communities with quality reproductive health services, and enhancing institutional
capacity, are other programme areas.

A full member of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), ACABEF managed to make impressive strides in its delivery of services.

The number of clients served in 2006 was 111,047 compared to 32,785 who received the same services in 2005.

However, the challenges within the country continue to put pressure on our services.

Some of these are: an HIV prevalence rate of 12.7 percent among females and 8.7 percent among men; maternal mortality of 1,100, and modern contraceptive prevalence of just 7 percent.

All these are problems ACABEF has to help solve.
