AIBEF gains popularity status akin to that of footballers

Association Ivoirienne Pour Le Bien Etre Familial (AIBEF) was established in 1979.

We work closely with the National Population Bureau in the planning and implementation of the National Population Policy and the National Youth Policy.

We provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services to our target group of young people, men and women.

The services provided in the clinics and outreach visits comprise:

  • diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) for HIV

Peer educators work in the youth centre - Centre Socio Educatif Aéré d’Abobo - and in the communities, where they provide information, counselling, condom distribution services and undertake campaigns around SRH issues.

Community Based Agents promote use of family planning methods.

In 2006, the delivery of these services benefited 198,774 clients, a significant number being the poor, marginalized or socially excluded persons.

We have implemented SRH projects in 29 centres in the private sector and are currently providing family planning and treatment of STIs in 70 Ministry of Health centres.

We are still faced with many challenges in Ivory Coast such as few health facilities: one dispensary for 10,000 people and one maternity clinic for 14,100 women; maternal mortality rate of 690; modern contraceptive prevalence of only 7 per cent; and high prevalence of female genital cutting.
