Answering unmet need

Cameroon National Planning Association for Family Welfare (CAMNAFAW)  was created in 1987, to respond to the needs of women who wanted to plan their families and enjoy high standards of living.

Since then, the Cameroon National Planning Association for Family Welfare (CAMNAFAW) has been the country’s leading provider of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services to the
Cameroonian population.

A full member of International Planned Parenthood Federation, we offer a variety of services which include:

  • family planning
  • vaccination
  • paediatric care services
  • antenatal and post-natal care
  • post abortion care
  • diagnosis and treatment of sexually
    transmitted infections and opportunistic infections
  • screening of cancers of the reproductive system
  • general laboratory work
  • voluntary counselling and testing (VCT)
  • home based care
  • behaviour change communication
  • messages aimed at reducing stigma and discrimination associated with the disease

Beneficiaries of these services include women of child bearing age, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), sex workers, and unmarried men and women.

In 2006 we served over 30,059 clients, with an additional 2,872 PLWHA being attended to at the
clinic and through home-based care.

In 2007 we marked a milestone when we extended our services to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in the face of local opposition to this movement and despite hostility shown against people who identify as something other than heterosexual.

The Cameroon National Planning Association for Family Welfare faces a steep hill ahead.

Lack of resources throughout the health sector, a maternal mortality rate of 870, per 100,000 live births, a modern contraceptive prevalence of 13 per cent, and HIV prevalence of 6.8 per cent among women (compared to 4.1 percent among men).
