Turning possibilities into realities

Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia (PPAZ) started from humble beginnings in 1972, as the main source of family planning services.

Planned Parenthood Federation of Zambia (PPAZ) has evolved into a formidable organization, that offers comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services.

Currently, we are implementing the integration of Gender and Empowerment Perspectives in HIV prevention.

We are targeting young people through the ‘Young Men as Equal Partners’ (YMEP) project.

We are running behaviour change communication projects in the community, and among young people in schools in two districts of Kasama and Nakonde.

Another project is Advocacy against HIV/AIDS using the AIDS Total Management Model (ATOMM) in 4 project sites in Solwezi District.

Out of school young people receive specific SRH services during traditional ceremonies.

A community-based distributors (CBD) programme is being implemented in the Copper belt,  providing maternity services as well as training employees of other NGOs.

Peer education and parent-elder educators projects are implemented by PPFZ as well.

Services provided through these projects include:

• family planning
• voluntary counseling and testing for HIV
• treatment of sexually transmitted infections
• antenatal and post-natal care
• emergency contraceptives
• laboratory tests
• ultrasound services
• screening for cancer of the cervix

Clients are referred for any other services like prevention of mother to child transmission, antiretroviral treatment, and home based care not offered by PPAZ.

In 2006 240,000 clients were served, of which 180,000 were poor, marginalized or socially excluded.

Another 5,122 young people were given information on gender, empowerment and HIV/AIDS.

Maternal mortality of 750 per 100,000 live births; modern contraceptive prevalence of 23 percent; HIV prevalence of 20% among females and 14% among males are continuing challenges.
