IPPF EN hosted a screening of the award-winning documentary, Vessel, ahead of Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion. The documentary follows the true story of Dr. Rebecca Gomperts, a pioneer in providing safe and legal abortion at sea to women at risk across the world. The film charts the journey of ‘Women on Waves’, an organisation which circumvents restrictive reproductive health laws to help desperate women who have been let down by laws in their own countries.
The screening was introduced by IPPF EN Regional Director, Caroline Hickson who spoke candidly about her experiences growing up in Ireland, where abortion is heavily restricted, as well as the shameful situation in Poland where lawmakers are pursuing a citizen's initative to implement a total ban on abortion. The movie was followed by a Q&A with Rebecca who fielded questions from how to volunteer aboard the ship to ways in which we can mobilise action on access to safe abortion.
